طبقه بندی یکی از مفاهیم پایه و یک بخش اساسی از تفکر منطقی و ریاضی کودکان پیش دبستان می باشد. طبقه بندی کردن عبارت است قرار دادن اشیاء یک جور در کنار هم و نامگذاری آنها به عنوان یک مجموعه یا گروه. کودک حیوانات پلاستیکی خود را به دو گروه تقسیم میکند و یکی را گروه حیوانات اهلی می نامد و دیگری را گروه حیوانات وحشی. او می داند که سیب، گیلاس و گلابی همگی جزء میوه ها هستند در حالیکه کاهو فلفل و پیاز جزء سبزیجات محسوب می‌شوند. مفهوم طبقه بندی از سطح خیلی ساده برای سنین پایین شروع می شود و برای سنین بالاتر بصورت پیچیده می تواند انجام شود. می توانید با درست کردن این جعبه به صورت بازی با کودک، این مهارت را در او تقویت کنید.
